Gardens
Nargess on gardening
I began building our garden at my home in Jamul, outside of San Diego, in 2010. Our house a great old farmhouse, built sometime around 1940. One of the things that attracted us to the property was the perfect southwest orientation of the house. Sunlight floods though the old glass windows all day long. When I began thinking about our garden, I knew I wanted as little lawn as possible. It would be a special place. With that in mind, I positioned my little patch of green directly in front of the house, where it tilts ever so slightly towards the sunlight.
I look at my garden as place where I can experiment with different design ideas. This spring has proven to be one of the most spectacular outcomes yet. Since March 1st, my lawn has been filled with wonderful color! This is their third spring, and every year seems to get better and better. I really can't imagine a better way to celebrate spring. Here's to wishing you all the start of an awesome season of gardening!
Gardening as Therapy
Jorge on gardening
Yeah. I hear you laughing. But seriously. Here's a link to a masters thesis on it. If anything, it makes my wife happy as I have put in two large-ish vegetable gardens, six huge flower beds, planted over 500 ornamental flowers, 100 ornamental plants and shrubs, six trees, and built a really neat indoor houseplant garden in our dining room windows.
I don't really understand why, but getting out in the sunshine and fresh air, the smell of clean dirt and aged compost, and getting the self-satisfaction out of turning our house into the house that everyone in the neighborhood talks about really feels awesome. Plus, all that tending and weeding tires one out well enough to sleep like a rock.
